The magnificent day of May 25, 1976, in Douglas, Cork, saw the birth of Murphy, a genuine genius. His upbringing was shaped by the soft resonance of his mother’s voice instructing him in French and the unceasing commitment of his father, Brendan, to his work for the Department of Education.

In the charming  neighborhood of Ballintemple, Cork, Murphy’s passion for learning flourished under the guidance of a family of educators. He enjoyed the beauty of his surroundings with his two beloved sisters, Sile and Orla, and his beloved younger brother, Páidi. At the juvenile age of ten, he realized the power of music as a storytelling medium, winning people over with each beautiful composition.

Murphy’s career as a performer started in high school when he participated in a theater class taught by Pat Kiernan, the director of Corcadorca Theatre Company. He described it as an intense event that gave him a feeling of complete aliveness and ignited a desire he was resolved to follow. Murphy’s English teacher and novelist William Wall saw his potential and encouraged him to try acting, but at first, he was more focused on his desire to be a rock star.

He and his brother Páidi entered the music scene in their late teens and early twenties, founding bands and engrossing themselves in their mutual love of The Beatles. The Sons of Mr. Green Genes, their most popular band, took their name from a Frank Zappa song.

Murphy remembered them with fondness for their guitar solos and quirky lyrics. Acid Jazz Records offered them a five-album agreement, but they declined since Páidi was still studying and they weren’t happy with the little money Murphy’s tunes were worth. Murphy thanked himself for not signing, expressing regret for the possible loss of creative freedom and control that frequently comes with record company deals.

Murphy, the ambitious law student who dared to defy the ordinary route that was set out for him. He started his legal career at University College Cork (UCC) in 1996 with a rebellious mindset. From the bottom of his heart, he had no idea that this was not his actual calling. He declared that he “had no ambitions to do it” after brazenly failing his first-year examinations in a magnificent display of indifference. How daring! That wasn’t all, though.

As if being a law student wasn’t enough, Murphy was also engulfed in the whirlwind of his band. With every beat of the drum and strum of the guitar, he knew that his heart craved something more than the monotonous world of legal jargon.

Then, as if by a twist of fate, the heavens opened up and unveiled the mesmerizing production of “A Clockwork Orange: A Play with Music” by Corcadorca, under the masterful direction of Kiernan. Like a moth to a flame, acting enticed Murphy, capturing his imagination and reeling him in with its intoxicating allure. Through the murky haze of uncertainty, Murphy faced his first major role in the amateur production of “Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme” by the UCC Drama Society

. Alongside him, the Irish-American comedian Des Bishop added an unexpected touch of comedic genius to the stage. And let’s not forget his stellar performance in “Little Shop of Horrors”, stealing the spotlight in the grandeur of the Cork Opera House. Yet, deep within the chambers of his candid confession, Murphy revealed a truth that might shatter your illusions.

His seemingly noble pursuits of the stage were merely a facade, a smokescreen to mask his true intentions. For you see, dear reader, his primary motivation during those hallowed days was not the pursuit of an acting career, oh no. It was the debauchery of parties and the allure of feminine charm that truly captivated his wandering gaze. Oh, Murphy, you enchanting enigma. Unearthing your journey reveals a tale of rebellion, passion, and perhaps a touch of calculated frivolity.
