Robert Downey Jr., born in 1965 in New York City, was exposed to drugs at a young age due to his father’s substance misuse. He had his first taste of marijuana at a party at eight years old. Downey Jr. spent most nights in his 20s and 30s drinking and looking for dealers. He relocated to Hollywood in the early 1980s to pursue an acting career, winning a Golden Globe for his role in Weird Science.

Career start and addiction struggles.

From 1996 to 2001, Downey was arrested multiple times for drug-related charges, including cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. He underwent drug treatment programs and admitted to being addicted since the age of eight. In 1996, he was arrested for possession of heroin, cocaine, and an unloaded handgun. He received probation and drug testing, but missed one in 1997 and spent six months in jail.

Downey, a former drug addict, was released after spending a year in California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison. He joined the Ally McBeal cast in 2000 and was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film. He also appeared as a writer and singer on Vonda Shepard’s Ally McBeal: For Once in My Life album and sang a duet with Sting. Downey claimed his performance on the series was overrated and said he didn’t give a fuck whether he ever acted again. In 2001, he was scheduled to play Hamlet in a Los Angeles stage production.

Reaching the lowest point

Robert Downey Jr. experienced a 36-month state prison sentence in 1999 and was transferred to Wavelengths International for six months of recovery. This was his “rock bottom,” where he lost everything, including his son, playing role on Ally McBeal, and owed a significant amount of money.

Cinematic turnaround

After receiving treatment, Robert Downey Jr. returned to acting in 2002 with parts in Zodiac and Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang. In 2005, he wed Susan Levin, and the couple has two kids. Downey’s success as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel movie franchises Iron Man and The Avengers was a result of his addiction treatment. He attributes his success in beating addiction to his marriage, his relationships with his wife and kids, Eastern martial arts, yoga, and the 12-Step program. Team Downey, the movie production firm they formed, employs both Downey and his wife.
